Motion only explains change

Animate only changes people cause (open, close, switch); no decorative motion.

Draft — not yet reviewed by a maintainer

Why it matters

Motion that follows an action shows what changed and where. Motion for its own sake competes with the content, delays reading and can make people feel unwell.

How to check it

Without interaction nothing moves, on load or scroll; transitions take 240ms or less.

The default it guards against

Floating hero blobs, a fade-up on every section as it scrolls in, parallax backgrounds and cursor-follow effects.

Library items that apply it

Where it comes from

  • design.md §10 (motion: 120–240ms; no cursor-follow or scroll-jacking)
  • design.md §15 (animation for decoration alone)
  • WCAG 2.2 SC 2.2.2 Pause, Stop, Hide (A)
